What is Questran?
Questran is used for reducing cholesterol level of body. Cholesterol
is reason for heart related disease. Questran is available as sachets. And each
sachet is made with 4 gram of active substance colestyramine. It belongs to a
group of drugs named bile acid binding resins.
Questran functions in the digestive system of body and
absorbs the cholesterol that contains bile acids that will pass out from body
by stool. It can be also used to stop kind of itching or diarrhoea.
The other ingredients are: citric acid anhydrous, orange
juice flavour, acacia, sucrose, polysorbate 80, propylene glycol alginate.
Important information about Questran before using it:
Do not take Questran drug if you have any of these issues:
- If patient is allergic to colestyramine or any other component of this drug;
- In case patient has disease that outcome is your bile duct being totally blocked like gall stones. Consult all with your doctor.
- Inform to your doctor in case you have dubieties because Questran contains 3.79 g sucrose.
- If you have been taking high doses of Questran for a long time it may decrease body’s capability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins from the food. Like vitamin A, D and K. Here, your medical professioanl might suggest you vitamin supplement.
- If here is family history of high blood cholesterol levels this drug is being given to a child. But you should go with your doctor advises.
Interaction of other medications with Questran:
- Inform to your medical professional or pharmacist in case you are using or history of other medicine: additional medicines.
- If you were using other drugs too, take them different time with Questran. Any additional drugs should be taken 4 – 6 hours after you have taken Questran or at least one hour before you use dose of Questran because Questran can change the effects of other drugs.
- Alcohol, meal, Pregnancy, breast-feeding and Questran
- Avoid alcohol because it can increase your cholesterol level.
- If you are taking Questran for reducing your cholesterol levels then you should take low fat diet.
- Do not to take this medicine in pregnancy or if you have plan for pregnancy. Here you should go with your doctor advises.
Tips on how to take Questran or dosing information of Questran:
- Always use this drug just as your doctor has instructed you. The recommended dose is usually 3 – 6 sachets per day.
- To reduce cholesterol level, dose recommended is 3 – 6 sachets per day. You can take it as a single dose or can divided into parts but up to 4 times a day recommended.
- If you are using it for relieve form itching, the recommended dose amount is 1 or 2 sachets per day.
- If you are using it for diarrhea, the recommended dose is three to six sachets a day
- In case of Children (six to tevelve), doctor will decide on the child’s weight and this drug is not recommended for children younger than 6 year old.

Possible side effects of Questran:
Like other drugs, this drug might have some side effects; however,
not everyone get affects from these;
The very common side effect is constipation. To reduce this effect you should
start drug with small dose and increase it slowly unless your doctor recommended
you strict dosing amount. Other less common unwanted side effects may occur:
- wind (flatulence);
- Feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting;
- Weight loss or gain;
- Diarrhea;
- Indigestion (dyspepsia);
- Bloatedness;
- Anorexia;
- Increased level of hyperchloremic acidosis in the blood, particularly in kids;
- Heartburn;
- Irritation of skin, rash, itching, around the anus or tongue;
- Difficulties with your body’s ability to absorb meal properly resulting in bulky, grey, or smelly stools;
- Increased tendency to bleed, it could be result of deficiency of vitamin K, vitamin A or vitamin D;
- Brittle or thin bones (osteoporosis);
